One World One Smile is supported by a network of dental surgeons, dental assistants and dedicated volunteers from around the world. Our core team is based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Dr. Carolina Benalal Co-Founder
Carolina Benalal has over 30 years of experience practicing dentistry in Europe. She holds specialties in dental biomaterials, fixed prosthesis and dental implants as well as advanced bone grafting and has attended the Misch Implant Institute in Pittsburgh USA. Carolina currently operates BD Clinic of Advanced Dentistry in Dar es Salaam. She started One World One Smile in order to share her knowledge and experience in areas of Tanzania where oral health care is not available.
Sophia Lyakurwa Program Assistant
Sophia is the most recent addition to the OWOS team in Dar es Salaam. Originally from Kilimanjaro Sophia lived in Kilombero before earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Community and Development from Ardhi Univeristy in 2014. Prior to joining OWOS Sophia worked with IDC Ltd, a boutique international consulting firm, on an IFC compliant resettlement action plan. In this role Sophia served as a community liaison spending the majority of her time in project impacted communities. She conducted focus group discussions and coordinated livelihoods development programs and vocational training courses to best prepare communities for seamless livelihood transitions. As Program Assistant with OWOS Sophia is active in designing and implementing outreach programs, including dental camps and the future work of the MDC, fundraising and ensuring local knowledge is at the core of OWOS’s work.
Areti Arvaniti Permanent volunteer in Tanzania
Areti is an dentist,who came to Tanzania about six months ago. She arrived from Greece. She has worked voluntarily in some other countries in Central America. Her passion to Africa and her people led her to Tanzania.She joined OWOS in order to contribute through her profession, wherever needed most!
